11月は、いろんなところに行きました。
箱根にも行ったし、名古屋にも行きました。
今月、私はITのテストを受けなければいけないので、少し忙しいですが それが終わったら、年末までゆっくりする予定です。
そして年末は、私の地元、沖縄に帰ります。
はい、じゃあ ここで先週の質問を チェックしましょう。
「みなさんの地元は どこですか？みなさんが育った場所です。地元は どんなところですか？なにか有名な場所や ものがありますか？」
今日は、私の地元、沖縄について話します。

Good morning. Hello. Good afternoon.
I am a Japanese teacher, Emi.
In November, I went to various places.
I visited Hakone and Nagoya, too.
This month, I have to take an IT test, so I’ll be a bit busy. But once that’s over, I plan to relax until the end of the year.
And for the New Year holidays, I’m going back to my hometown, Okinawa.
Alright, let’s check last week’s question.
“Where is your hometown? It’s the place where you grew up. What kind of place is it? Are there any famous landmarks or things there?”
Today, I’ll talk about my hometown, Okinawa.
私は、沖縄で生まれて沖縄で育ちました。
大学まで沖縄にいたので、23歳ぐらいまで沖縄に住んでいました。
沖縄は、日本の南にある島です。東京から飛行機で だいたい3時間ぐらいかかります。
今、私は結婚して 神奈川県という 東京の近くの地域に住んでいますが、地元が大好きなんですね。
沖縄が大好きなんです。
だから、今日は 沖縄の有名なものとか 私が好きなところを話したいと思います。

I was born and raised in Okinawa.
I stayed there through university, so I lived in Okinawa until I was about 23 years old.
Okinawa is an island located in the southern part of Japan. It’s about a three-hour flight from Tokyo.
Now, I’m married and live in Kanagawa Prefecture, which is near Tokyo, but I really love my hometown.
I love Okinawa so much.
So today, I want to share some famous things about Okinawa and what I like about it.
まず、沖縄は きれいな海が有名です。
南国なので、1年中暖かくて、海に入れる時期も長いです。
ちょっとネットで調べました、
調べてみたら、神奈川は7月から8月の2ヶ月だけ、ビーチで泳ぐことができます。
でも、沖縄は 3月から9月ぐらいまで、7ヶ月もビーチで泳ぐことができます。
たぶん他の場所より とても長いと思います。
でも、私は泳げないので、ビーチで泳げる時期が長くても 短くても、どっちでも大丈夫です。
泳げないですけど、海を見るのは好きなので 沖縄に住んでいたときは、よく海に行っていました。

First of all, Okinawa is famous for their beautiful ocean.
Since it’s a tropical region, the weather is warm year-round, and the swimming season is quite long.
I looked it up online, and apparently, in Kanagawa, you can only swim at the beach from July to August, just two months.
But in Okinawa, the swimming season lasts about seven months, from March to September.
That’s probably much longer than most other places.
But since I can’t swim, it doesn’t really matter to me whether the swimming season is long or short.
I can’t swim, but I do enjoy looking at the ocean. When I lived in Okinawa, I often went to the beach just to enjoy the view.
沖縄に観光に来る人は、みんな海で ダイビングをしたり、シュノーケリングをしたりしています。
でも、私は泳げないので、ダイビングもシュノーケリングもしたことないです。
私が泳げないことを話すと、みんな「え〜、沖縄出身なのに？！」とか「もったいない！」とか言いますね。
言いますけど、泳げないので 仕方ないです。
でも沖縄は自然がきれいなので、泳げなくても 楽しいです。

Tourists who visit Okinawa often go diving or snorkeling in the ocean.
But since I can’t swim, I’ve never tried diving or snorkeling myself.
When I tell people that I can’t swim, they often say, “What?! But you’re from Okinawa?!” or “What a waste!”
But I can’t help it—I just can’t swim.
Still, Okinawa’s natural beauty is so stunning that you can have a great time even if you don’t go into the water.
あと、沖縄はご飯がおいしいです。
でも豚肉をよく使うので、ムスリムの人とか ベジタリアンの人はちょっと大変かもしれませんね。
たとえば、有名な沖縄料理で「沖縄そば」という料理があります。
「そば」という名前ですけど、日本のそばとは 全然違います。
麺は、ラーメンの麺と似ています。
スープは、豚肉と かつお節を使った だしです。
かつお節は、英語でBonito Flakesです。
沖縄そばの上には、豚肉とか ねぎのトッピングが のっています。

Another thing Okinawa is famous for is their delicious food.
However, since pork is often used, it might be a bit challenging for Muslims or vegetarians.
For example, one well-known Okinawan dish is called Okinawa soba.
Although it’s called “soba,” it’s completely different from Japanese soba noodles.
The noodles are similar to ramen noodles.
The soup is made with pork and bonito flakes (called katsuobushi in Japanese).
Okinawa soba is topped with pork and green onions.
あと一つ、有名な沖縄料理が「ゴーヤーチャンプルー」です。
「ゴーヤーチャンプルー」は 沖縄の方言です。
ゴーヤーは野菜で、標準語（Standard Japanese)で 「にがうり」です。
英語で Bitter Melonですけど、めずらしい野菜なので、英語の言葉は あんまり有名じゃないと思います。
そして、苦いので 子どもはあんまり好きじゃないです。
私も、8歳ぐらいまで好きじゃなかったんですけど、今は好きです。
そして「チャンプルー」は「ごちゃまぜ」という意味です。
たくさんの材料を入れて、作る 炒め物です。
今でも、家で ときどき作ります。

Another famous Okinawan dish is “Goya Chanpuru”.
“Goya Chanpuru” is in the Okinawan dialect.
Goya is a type of vegetable. In standard Japanese, it’s called nigauri, or bitter melon in English.
But since it’s a rare vegetable, the English term isn’t very well-known.
It’s quite bitter, so kids don’t usually like it.
I didn’t like it either until I was about 8 years old, but now I enjoy it.
The word Chanpuru means “mixed up.” It’s a stir-fry made by mixing various ingredients.
I still make it at home sometimes.
食べ物以外は、文化？というか特徴なんですけど、沖縄には アメリカの基地があります。基地は Baseですね。
だから、沖縄には アメリカ人がたくさんいます。
観光地で、アメリカンヴィレッジという場所もあって、おいしいレストランとか、おもしろいお店もたくさんあります。
アメリカ人以外にも、留学生もたくさんいるので、沖縄は結構にぎやかな場所だと思います。

Aside from food, there’s one more thing I’d like to mention about Okinawa.
Okinawa has American military bases. Base in Japanese is kichi.
Because of the bases, there are many Americans in Okinawa.
There’s even a tourist spot called American Village with lots of great restaurants and fun shops.
Besides Americans, there are also many international students, so I think Okinawa is quite a lively place.
そして、沖縄の人は とてものんびりしている性格です。
あんまり急ぎません。なんでも ゆっくりしている人が多いです。
もちろん、時間にきびしい人もいますけど、きびしくない人が多いです。
とても有名な沖縄のフレーズで、「うちなータイム」っていう言葉があります。
「うちなー」は、沖縄の方言で「沖縄」という意味です。
だから「うちなータイム」は、「沖縄時間」という意味ですね。
沖縄の人は、アクションがゆっくりということを表す言葉です。
ちなみに、私は「うちなータイム」の人じゃないと思います。たぶん。笑

Okinawan people are known for being very laid-back.
They don’t rush much and tend to take things slow.
Of course, some people are punctual, but many are not.
There’s a famous Okinawan phrase, Uchinaa time.
Uchinaa means “Okinawa” in the Okinawan dialect.
So, Uchinaa time translates to “Okinawa time.”
It refers to the relaxed pace of life in Okinawa.
By the way, I don’t think I’m an Uchinaa time type of person—probably. (laughs)
今年の年末は、10日間ぐらい沖縄に帰ります。
久しぶりに友だちと会ったり、友だちの子どもたちと遊んだり、家族とゆっくりしたりしようと思います。
