The things you do when you have free time are called “暇つぶし” (killing time).
Today, I’d like to talk about my own ways of killing time.

たとえば、1時に駅で待ち合わせをして、そのあと一緒に昼ご飯を食べましょう。
待ち合わせは1時です。
でも、少し早い電車に乗って、早く駅に着きました。
30分時間があります。どうしよう…？

When you hang out with a friend, you usually arrange a meeting time, right?
For example: “Let’s meet at the station at 1 o’clock, and then have lunch together.”
The meeting time is 1 p.m.
But if you take an earlier train and arrive early,
you have 30 minutes to spare. What should you do?
こんなとき、30分ぐらいあったら私はカフェに行きます。
カフェに行って、お茶とかカフェオレを飲んで、少しゆっくりします。

In that case, if I have around 30 minutes, I go to a café.
I go to a café, drink some tea or café au lait, and relax a bit.
あとは近くのお店をブラブラします。
「ブラブラする」聞いたことありますか？
「ブラブラする」は、特に何もしないで のんびり歩くことです。
ゆっくり歩きます。
買いたいものがなくても、お店の中を見たり、歩いたりすることです。
オノマトペですね。「ブラブラする」使ってみてください。
30分しか時間がないときは、カフェに行ったり、お店をブラブラしたりします。

I also stroll around nearby shops.
Have you heard the word “ブラブラする (burabura suru)”?
“Burabura suru” means to walk around aimlessly and leisurely.
(“Nonbiri Aruku” means) walking slowly.
Even if there’s nothing you want to buy, you can still look around inside stores and walk around.
It’s an onomatopoeia. Try using “burabura suru” sometime.
So, when I only have 30 minutes, I go to a café or stroll around shops.
でも、もし1時間以上 時間があったら、カラオケに行くこともあります。
近くにカラオケがあったら、1人で行って、好きな歌を歌います。

But if I have more than an hour, I sometimes go to karaoke.
If there’s a karaoke place nearby, I go alone and sing songs I like.
あと、マンガ喫茶に行くこともあります。
マンガ喫茶では、静かなところでマンガを読んだり、ドリンクを飲んだりできます。
読みたかったマンガを読んでみたり、新しいマンガをチェックすることもできますね。

I also go to manga cafés.
At manga cafés, you can read manga in a quiet space and drink something.
I read manga I’ve been wanting to read, or check out new ones.
友達と遊ぶとき、私は よく東京で遊ぶんですけど、私の家は ちょっと東京から遠いです。
東京まで1時間半ぐらいかかります。
だから、ちょっと早めに家を出たり、同じ日に東京で2つの予定があったりします。
だから、よく暇つぶしをするんです。

When I hang out with friends, I often meet them in Tokyo, but my house is a bit far from Tokyo.
It takes about an hour and a half.
So I often leave early, or have two plans in Tokyo on the same day.
That’s why I often kill time.

家で暇なときは、よくYouTubeを見ます。
YouTubeはいろいろな動画がありますね。
ドラマ、旅行、料理、語学のチャンネルとかです。

But when I watch YouTube or use my phone, time passes so quickly.
One or two hours go by in a flash.
I find myself thinking, “What? It’s already this late?”
So I try not to watch YouTube or use my phone too much.
でも、最近はあんまり暇じゃありません。
やることがたくさんあります。
家でも外でも、時間があるときは、レッスンのカリキュラムを作ったり、ポッドキャストのトピックを考えたりします。
いそがしいですけど、楽しいです。
だから、仕事だけど ちょっと暇つぶしみたいです。

But lately, I haven’t had much free time.
I have a lot to do.
Whether I’m at home or outside, if I have some time, I work on making lesson curriculum or think about podcast topics.
I’m busy, but I’m enjoying it.
So even though it’s work, it kind of feels like killing time too.
