A long time ago, Christmas was an event for Christians but it has become a common event for everybody in any religion nowadays.
By the way, do you know how many Christians we have in Japan?
It’s 1.9 million which is only 1% of Japanese popularity.
<Well then, what’s their (major) religion in Japan?>
In fact, most Japanese are non-religious. And we, non-religious Japanese also celebrate Christmas.

クリスマスは祝日じゃない？｜Christmas is not a Holiday?
日本もクリスマスを祝いますが、ドイツやアメリカのような大きなイベントではありません。
そのため、クリスマスが平日の場合、会社員は仕事に行きます。学生は学校に行きます。
休みじゃありません。
クリスマスが週末の場合は、休みになるのでラッキーですね！

As mentioned before, we celebrate Christmas in Japan but the event is not as big as it is in other countries such as Germany or the United States.
Therefore, if Christmas is on a weekday, employees go to work and students go to school.
It is not a holiday for us.
If Christmas was on the weekend, we could be lucky enough to have a day off.

みなさんの国では、誰とクリスマスを過ごしますか？
家族ですか？友達ですか？恋人ですか？
日本のクリスマスは、「恋人」と過ごすイメージがあります。
恋人たちは、クリスマスにお洒落をして、イルミネーションを見て、おいしいディナーを食べて、お互いにプレゼントをあげます。
他の国では、家族とクリスマスを過ごすことが多いので、少し違いますね。

In Japan, we imagine our Christmas is for couples.
They dress up nicely, watch illumination on the street, dine out, and give each other a gift.
It is a little different from other countries where spending Christmas with their family is more common.

アメリカやヨーロッパの国では、クリスマスの日に「ターキー（七面鳥）」を食べますね。
日本では、あまりターキーを食べません。
えみ先生じゃあ、どんなものを食べるか分かりますか？
ターキーの代わりに、日本では フライドチキンがよく食べられています。
特に、ケンタッキー（KFC）のフライドチキンを買って食べる人がたくさんいます。
そのため、クリスマスにケンタッキーに行くと とても混んでいて、予約がないとチキンを買うことができません。
最近では、コンビニのフライドチキンも 人気です。
でもクリスマスにチキンが食べたかったら、予約をするのがおすすめです。

I know that you would eat Turkey on a Christmas day in the United States or Europe.
But we do not in Japan.
<So what do you eat?>
Instead, we often eat fried chicken. Especially, many people would have fried chicken from KFC for Christmas.
So, we cannot get any fried chicken without a reservation if you go to KFC on a Christmas day.
Fried Chicken from Konbini (convenience store) has become popular for Christmas in the last few years.
But if you feel like having fried chicken on Christmas in Japan, I strongly recommend you make a reservation.
日本のクリスマスケーキ｜Christmas Cake in Japan
日本では、クリスマスの日には フライドチキンの他にケーキも食べます。
クリスマスといえば、シュトーレンが有名ですが、日本は、ショートケーキやチョコレートケーキなど好きなケーキを買って食べます。
特別なケーキがあるわけではありませんが、日本では クリスマスにケーキを食べるのが普通です。
私も、小さい時は、よくチョコレートケーキを食べました！

In Japan, we eat a cake besides fried chicken on Christmas.
For Christmas, Stollen is a famous cake but we do not mind what cake to eat so it could be Strawberry sponge cake, chocolate cake, etc.
It’s not that we have a special cake for Christmas but it is very normal to eat a cake for Christmas.
I used to have chocolate cake often when I was little.

クリスマスプレゼント｜Christmas Presents
日本のクリスマスは、「恋人」のイメージがあると話しましたが、もちろん家族でもお祝いします。
みなさんは、クリスマスプレゼントを「交換」しますか？
日本では、家族でクリスマスを祝う時、家族（サンタとも言います🎅🤫）は 子供だけにプレゼントをあげます。
夫婦でプレゼントを交換することもありますが、少し珍しいですね。

When it comes to giving Christmas presents, parents (a.k.a Santa) would give presents only to their children.

クリスマスのイルミネーション｜Christmas Illumination
日本もクリスマスの時期は、イルミネーションのイベントがあります。
外国では、家の外にイルミネーションの飾り付けをしますね。
日本では、イルミネーションの飾り付けをしている家は少ないです。
しかし、大きな都市に行くと、通りやビルのイルミネーションがとてもきれいです。
大阪のような大きな街や、お店がきれいに飾り付けされます。
