I am a Japanese teacher, Emi.
I just came back from a walk with my husband.
Since we moved to a new place, we’ve been trying to exercise as much as possible.
But we haven’t been doing it very well.

すごく小さいとき、たぶん5歳か6歳ぐらいのときは、両親が「将来は先生になるんだよ」って よく言っていました。

でも、大きくなって「本当に先生になりたいのかな？」と考えるようになりました。

My childhood dreams changed often depending on the year.
When I was very small, maybe around five or six, my parents often said,
“You’re going to be a teacher in the future.”
So I thought, “Okay, I want to be a teacher!”
But when I got older, I started wondering, “Do I really want to be a teacher?”
At that time, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do yet.
でも、小学校の高学年、（高学年は12歳とか11歳ぐらいのとき）その時にパン作りが好きになりました。

I thought maybe I’d like a job related not only to bread, but also to nutrition and food balance.
Then I wanted to become a nutritionist —
a person who advises about food balance and health.
At that time, I even looked up universities where I could study to become a nutritionist.
でも、高校に入るとまたいろんな新しい仕事について知りました。
高校のとき、私は世界で働きたいと思うようになりました。
大きい夢ですね。
世界のニュースを見て、いろんな国の人が安全に幸せに生活できるようにしたいと考えるようになったんです。

However, when I entered high school, I learned about many new jobs.
Then I started thinking, “I want to work around the world.”
That’s a big dream, right?
After seeing the world news, I began thinking that I wanted to help people around the world live safely and happily.
その頃の夢は、国連職員になることでした。
国連は英語でUnited Nationsですね。
国連職員は世界の平和や教育、そして貧困（貧しい人）をサポートする仕事です。
「かっこいいなぁ。私もそんな人になりたいな。」と思っていました。

At that time, my dream was to work for the United Nations.
The United Nations is called Kokuren in Japanese.
UN staff members work to support world peace, education, and alleviate poverty for people in need.
I thought, “That’s so cool. I want to be someone like that.”
そんな夢を考えていたんですけど、高校3年生、18歳の時にアメリカに留学しました。
留学は英語でStudy abroadですね。
留学先の学校で 日本語のクラスに参加したとき、日本語を教えているアメリカ人の先生と日本人のアシスタントの先生がいました。
その時、私は思いました。
「日本語の先生ってすごい。かっこいい。」
日本語を勉強している外国の生徒たちが とっても楽しそうに学んでいて、私も いつかこんなふうに日本語を教える仕事をしてみたいと思いました。

While I was thinking about that dream,
when I was a senior in high school — 18 years old — I studied abroad in the U.S.
At the school I went to, there was a Japanese class, and it had both an American teacher and a Japanese assistant teacher.
When I saw them, I thought,
“Japanese teachers are amazing. They’re so cool.”
The students studying Japanese looked like they were having so much fun learning,
and I thought that someday, I’d like to have a job teaching Japanese like that, too.
日本に帰ってから、言語（Language）を勉強できる大学を選んで進学しました。
大学に行きました。
大学を卒業した後、先生じゃなくて普通のサラリーマンになりましたが、しばらく会社で働いたあと、日本語の先生になることができました。

After returning to Japan, I entered a university where I could study languages.
After graduating from university, I first worked as an office worker, not as a teacher.
But after some time, I was able to become a Japanese teacher.
考えてみると、私はいろんな夢がありました。
先生、パン屋さん、栄養士、国連職員、そして日本語の先生。
最終的な仕事は「日本語の先生」で、一番最初の「先生」に戻ってきたんですね。
人生っておもしろいですね。
子どもの頃の夢が 少しずつ形を変えて、今の自分に つながっているのかもしれません。

Looking back, I realize I had many dreams —
a teacher, a baker, a nutritionist, a UN staff member, and finally, a Japanese teacher.
In the end, my final job became “a Japanese teacher,” so I kind of came back to my very first dream — “a teacher.”
Life is interesting, isn’t it?
Maybe our childhood dreams slowly change shape and eventually lead us to who we are today.
